I am passionate about the art of piano teaching and consider it as important to who I am as a musician as everything I have learnt and played. I offer lessons privately, from my home studio in Stoke Newington, London, at the homes of students throughout London, and over Skype. My teaching is based on my own interests and experiences – I ensure all students have a solid classical grounding, with the ability to read music, understand how it is created and what makes us enjoy it. I try to expose the student to the styles and disciplines that have shaped music, including classical, jazz, blues, contemporary, world music, improvisation, theory, harmony, and composition. Ultimately, it is the student’s own goals and interests that guide them, whether it is for pleasure, classical examinations, a desire to improvise and compose music, or as a second instrument, but always to develop an understanding and appreciation for music.
I studied piano pedagogy with Penelope Roskell, and psychology of music performance with Dr Patricia Holmes, whilst at Trinity Laban. My teaching draws on these experiences, particularly with regard to memorisation, performance anxiety, piano technique, and physiological aspects of piano playing. I also conducted research into the mysterious skill of sight reading, which you can download and read here – Sight Reading – and it has helped in my own understanding and teaching.
I have taught students aged from 4 to 75, and of all abilities. I offer one to one and group lessons (up to 4 students at a time) in music theory and harmony, and I also offer lessons over Skype, to advanced students only. I am currently accepting students from Grade 2 ability and above, and have availability for lessons on Mondays and Wednesdays, daytime and evening. Please contact me via the form below, by phone or by email, with some information about yourself, and your availability, to book a lesson.
“Ben is a fantastic, patient and versatile teacher, ideal for young people! He’s very friendly and all our contact with him is fun and engaging. My children have learned music theory, practice, aural, composition and improvisation from Ben. Moreover, seeing them develop a real sense of musicality, style, interpretation and appreciation has been wonderful. This is something that Ben does exceptionally well. His passion and knowledge about music is naturally infectious. On a practical point of view, Ben is always reliable yet flexible around lesson times. He is a delight to have in our home. He has taught all my children even my 4 year old who was engrossed for 25 minutes! Ben plays piano beautifully and has also accompanied and encouraged my children singing on several occasions.”
